Cataract Surgery in Dubai. Restore Clear Vision at ISMC.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The healthy lens is normally transparent, allowing light to pass through and focus clearly on the retina. As a cataract develops, the lens gradually becomes cloudy, causing vision to become blurred, dull, or distorted.

Cataracts usually develop slowly and may initially affect only a small part of the lens. As the condition progresses, vision becomes increasingly impaired, making daily activities such as reading, driving, recognizing faces, or watching television more difficult.

Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision impairment worldwide and are most frequently associated with the natural aging process.

The most common cause of cataracts is aging. Over time, proteins within the natural lens begin to break down and clump together, causing the lens to lose its transparency.

Other factors that may increase the risk include:

  • Increasing age
  • Diabetes
  • Long-term corticosteroid use
  • Previous eye injury
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Excessive ultraviolet (UV) light exposure
  • Smoking
  • Family history of cataracts
  • Certain medical conditions

Although cataracts are commonly age-related, they can also occur in younger individuals due to injury, certain diseases, or congenital conditions.

Are cataracts preventable?
Age-related cataracts cannot always be prevented. However, wearing UV-protective sunglasses, managing diabetes, avoiding smoking, and maintaining regular eye examinations may support long-term eye health.
Is cataract surgery painful?
The procedure is generally well tolerated because anesthetic eye drops or local anesthesia are used. Some mild discomfort may occur during the recovery period.
How long does cataract surgery take?
The surgical procedure itself often takes around 15 to 30 minutes, although the total visit to the surgical facility may be longer.
Will I need glasses after surgery?
Many patients experience significantly improved vision after cataract surgery. Depending on the type of intraocular lens used and your visual needs, you may still require glasses for certain activities such as reading or distance vision.
Can both eyes be treated on the same day?
The timing of surgery for each eye depends on your ophthalmologist's clinical assessment and treatment plan.
Is cataract surgery safe?
Cataract surgery has an excellent safety record when performed by qualified ophthalmologists on appropriately selected patients. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, which your surgeon will discuss during your consultation.
